Gyu Kaku is a terrific new Japanese BBQ "Yakiniku" restaurant in Downtown Naperville that we are very excited about! While Naperville has its fair share of Japanese-style restaurants, this is the first traditional Japanese Yakiniku restaurant to open in this area. If you think you know Japanese, you're in for a nice surprise in this authentic Japanese Yakiniku BBQ restaurant.
We lived in Japan for 5 years and love all types of Japanese food, but a lot of Japanese restaurants in the states serve a Western version of Sushi or are a Hibachi steakhouse where a chef provides a meal and gives a performance. We enjoy both of these, but we're especially excited to see Gyu Kaku open in Downtown Naperville because it offers a more authentic version of a traditional Japanese BBQ Yakiniku restaurant.
What is Japanese BBQ--Hibachi or Yakiniku
YAKINIKU Restaurants:
Yakiniku (焼き肉), meaning "grilled meat" refers to a Japanese style of cooking, where diners cook their own meats, seafood, and vegetables over a flame in the center of the table. The ingredients are then dipped in sauces known as tare before being eaten. Not only is the food delicious, but the whole experience provides a fun atmosphere for conversation.
Gyu Kaku a Great Yakiniku Restaurant
While there are 5-10 Hibachi-style restaurants in the Naperville area, there is only 1 authentic Japanese-style Yakiniku restaurant--Gyu-Kaku. If you give it a try you'll experience the difference and enjoy it!
Gyu-Kaku is a family of restaurants. There are over six hundred Gyu-Kaku in Japan. Recently these Japanese BBQ restaurants have been imported to the states with several locations throughout the US.
Gyu-Kaku, meaning "Horn of the Bull" in Japanese provides the authentic Japanese Yakiniku (barbeque) dining experience where customers share premium cooked meats over a flaming charcoal grill. Gyu-Kaku offers a wide range of meats including the bestseller Harami Skirt Steak in Miso marinade, Certified Angus Kalbi Short Rib in Tare Soy marinade. Other popular items include pork, lamb, duck & chicken, Shrimp Garlic & a variety of vegetables. Each table has its own personal grill where you share cooking responsibilities with conversation.

What is Japanese BBQ--Hibachi or Yakiniku
HIBACHI Restaurants:
Most American's think of Japanese steakhouses as HIBACHI restaurants. In the states, Hibachi restaurants usually have chef who cooks on a big heated metal table in front of the guests. The chef will also provide a performance while he cooks--an onion volcano or a choo-choo train. While this art of cooking originated in Japan, it was primarily popular with US ex-pats and was not popular with locals as it was deemed ‘improper’ and ‘not in good taste’.

Pro-Tips:
- The menu is extensive with various preselected "sets" that are great options. The sets have a mix of meats and vegetables. WARNING: The "sets" come with A LOT of food. If it says it feeds 3 people, it's usually enough for 4 or 5 people.
- Gyu-Kaku has a great "rewards points" system. So if you are a frequent diner, be sure to sign up.
- This restaurant fills up FAST so be sure to make a reservation.
- One of our favorite things on the menu is the spicy cucumbers! But beware if you try them--they are very addicting!
- Parking in the garage is easy. This restaurant is right by Barnes and Noble so just use that garage.
