The Best Ice Cream, Gelato and Cookie Dough in Downtown Naperville


Approximately 20 friends of Naperville Foodies joined a walking tour of Naperville’s Ice Cream and Gelato spots. The tour brought us to the conclusion that Downtown Naperville definitely has its share of great dessert shops. Below is a list of some the group favorites and our recommendations that any ice cream or gelato lover shouldn't miss.

MIDICI In addition to great Neapolitan pizza and calzones, MidiCi offers real “Italian Ice” (Gelato.) The flavors are authentic and nicely cap off a great Italian meal. But if you still have a little extra room for dessert after your pizza, you really HAVE TO TRY the Nutella Calzone. It's a warm dessert filled with Nutella and fresh berries, wrapped in the same Neapolitan Pizza crust that makes the pizzas so great. It's then baked for 90 seconds at 900 degrees in the brick ovens. Then it's lightly frosted with powdered sugar and.. drizzled in even more Nutella. It’s really so delicious that it’s hard to describe and a must have on any foodies dessert checklist.
GROUP FAVORITES: Chocolate Gelato, Nutella Berry Calzone (!!), Banana Nutella Calzone

SWEET HOME GELATO was definitely a group favorite. The owners of this new restaurant have been making Gelato for years. Before opening this new store, they worked with Italian Gelato experts for 4 months to perfect their recipe and it is PERFECT. My favorite of the day was the Black Cherry Gelato.  It's creamy and has deep rich flavors and was so similar to real Italian Gelato that it transported me back to my college study abroad days in Europe. I'll definitely be making another trip back here! In addition to the great Gelato, t they also have great coffee, cold brew and other desserts.

KILWINS was another highlight of the tour, receiving several "this is my favorite" comments. Kilwins features a variety of amazing treats from hand paddled Mackinac Island Fudge, Hand-Crafted Chocolates, to the Perfect Caramel Apple and 28 flavors of Original Recipe Ice Cream.  They use fresh antibiotic-free, rbST-free milk and cream from family farms.  Their select ingredients are combined into a premium base mix which is pasteurized and homogenized and then combined with fudge, caramel, nuts, chocolate chips, and other quality confections.

COOKIE DOUGH CREATIONS, a  NAPERVILLE ORIGINAL, was another group favorite. It began in 1994 when Jim Bewersdorf began making cookie dough pies out of his home and selling them to restaurants. Soon Jim’s original Cookie Dough Ice Cream Pie was being sold in more than 100 restaurants in Chicagoland. In 1995 the retail store opened its doors in Naperville, Illinois. They feature 8 flavors of raw dough, 16 flavors of ice cream. They never use mixes, artificial ingredients, or frozen products. They’re a small, local operation with a lot of heart – no fluff, no filler, just the best desserts you’ve ever tasted, straight from the mixing bowl.

COLD STONE CREAMERY  Cold Stone Creamery makes their ice cream is made fresh in the store. It's churned from the finest ingredients and mixed with your choice of candy, cakes, fruits or nuts on a frozen granite stone they proudly serve the best tasting, made-to-order ice cream you’ve ever had.
GROUP FAVORITES: Cake Batter Ice Cream, Oreo Ice Cream, Cotton Candy Ice Cream,  all of the Mix-ins.
